How to get to Cochem Castle

There are a few options to get to Cochem castle. You can either get to the castle on foot, which is totally doable with kids, or take the shuttle up.

I suggest walking up to the Castle so you can enjoy the beautiful scene getting up. If walking up is not for you, then the shuttle is the next best thing.

Reichsburg Cochem Castle Tour

I highly recommend taking the tour of Cochem Castle. Not only was it a fun tour, but very informative as well. We learned so much about Cochem castles history, and the guide was very knowledgeable.

Built around the 11th century, Cochem castle has seen its fair share of wars and has been completely destroyed and left in ruins up until 1868.

This beautifully restored castle truly feels like you’ve stepped back in time. Everything, including the furnishings were carefully collected by the Ravené family, who used it as their summer residence at the time.

Our Cochem castle tour lasts about 40 minutes which was enough time, especially with kids. Our little one enjoyed this tour so much, but if your weary about taking a tour with your kiddos, you can still visit the castle grounds. There is also a gift shop and a restaurant at the castle.

Go in search of the Medieval City Gates

On your sightseeing tour of Cochem, make sure to look out for the town’s old Medieval city gates.

One in particular is the Endert gate Tower, with its adjoining Guard House dating back to 1332, and Martins Gate that was built a few years later.

Both gates served as a passage into the city, and are the last few of the remaining town walls.

Stroll along the Moselpromenade

One of the best things to do in Cochem is a stroll along the Moselpromenade. Take in the amazing views of the castle and town while you stroll along the river promenade on both sides of the river.

You can even relax in one of the benches and watch the swans swim by, or visit one of the playgrounds in the area and let the kids have a little fun.

There are also lots of cafes and restaurants along the river. Grab some refreshments and just admire the views.
