Road trip through the Mosel Region of Germany

The Mosel Region is Germany’s most beautiful river valley. It is home to picturesque storybook towns, with majestic castles perched up on grapevine covered hills.

Some of the Mosel regions major towns are Koblenz, Cochem, Zell, Bernkastel, Piesport, and Trier, with so many smaller towns sprinkled in-between.

The best way to explore all the picturesque towns in the Mosel Valley is on a road trip through Germany.

On the blog I will share some of our favorite places to visit on a road trip through the Mosel region of Germany.

Our Mosel Valley road trip starts out in Trier, winding our way into Koblenz, where the Mosel River meets the Rhine.

Best time to visit the Mosel Valley

The Mosel region in Germany is beautiful in any season, but I believe a springtime or summer visit, is the best time to explore the region.

There’s nothing like seeing the vibrant colors of the Mosel in bloom during the warmer months.

If you want to explore the Mosel Valley wine region, then the best time to visit is from about April to October, when the Mosel regions wine festivals are in full swing.

Top places to visit in the Mosel region of Germany

Trier Germany

Trier Germany is located in the southwestern part of the Mosel region.

The city was first founded by the Romans and you will still find several well-preserved Roman structures like the Porta Nigra gate, the ruins of Roman baths, an amphitheater just outside the center and a stone bridge over the Moselle River.

One of the most interesting things about our visit to Trier, was learning that the Trier Cathedral supposedly houses the robe that Jesus wore during his crucifixion.

It was amazing knowing that this relic exists, but sadly can’t view it since it’s only shown to the public once in awhile.

Cochem

Cochem Germany is one of the most beautiful castle towns in the Mosel Region.

The castle perched up on the hills is truly breathtaking, and made you feel like you were in a fairytale.

Tour the Reichsburg Cochem castle, explore the town’s main square, or walk down the river promenade.

There’s so much to do on a visit to Cochem. You can also go on a hike, cycle the Mosel region, or go on a wine tasting tour.

Beilstein

Just a short boat ride on the Mosel River is the fairytale town of Beilstein. Known also as the “sleeping beauty of the Mosel” Beilstein is one of the most charming little towns in the Region.

You can easily explore all there is to see in Beilstein as a short stop on your road trip through the Mosel Region of Germany.

It’s a very small town and a few hours is enough time to visit. Tour the Beilstein castle ruins and admire the Mosel River views.

Take a stroll through the picturesque streets and just be in awe of the beauty around you! It’s one of the most beautiful towns in Germany!

Burg Eltz castle

The Mosel Valley is home to some of the most beautiful storybook castles. One of these fairytale castles is the Burg Eltz Castle.

If you’re in search of an authentic castle visit, then Burg Eltz should be on your itinerary when visiting the Mosel Region.

Burg Eltz is one of the remaining castles that have never been to destroyed, so your visit will be one of the most authentic, and a real learning experience.

Take a tour of Burg Eltz and learn more about the history of the Eltz family, who have owned this castle since the 12th century. It was an amazing piece of history in the Mosel region of Germany.

Koblenz

Koblenz Germany is where the Mosel River meets the Rhine, and where we end our road trip.

One of the top things to do when visiting Koblenz is a trip up to the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. Take the cable car up and enjoy the views on your way up.

Take a sightseeing tour of Koblenz and explore the charming streets. There’s even a fun little splash pad in the summer, perfect for the little ones.

You can also visit the Electoral Palace and it’s beautiful gardens. There’s even a fun little playground on the premises, and a large open space for them to run around.

Where to stay in the Mosel valley

During our road trip through the Mosel Region of Germany, we stayed at a few locations.

One of our favorite hotels in the Mosel Region was the Apartment Haus Daniela in Cochem.

The best part about this stay was it’s location directly across Cochem Castle.

The views from our room was so amazing to wake up to, and I highly recommend a stay here when exploring the Mosel Region.
