Road trip through Luxembourg, one of Europe’s smallest country

Go on a road trip through Luxembourg and explore one of Europes smallest country. Luxembourg is one of the most overlooked countries to visit in Europe, but should be on everyones bucket list.

Luxembourg is an outdoors lovers paradise, with many opportunities for some outdoor adventures. It’s a great place for hiking, camping, kayaking, any and all things outdoors!

We were blown away at how beautiful the landscape and scenery was on our road trip. You can also go on a castle hunting adventure, explore historic cities, and so much more.

On the blog I will share some of the places we visited during our road trip through Luxembourg, so you can plan your trip to one of the most beautiful countries in Europe!

Top places to see in Luxmebourg

Road trip through Luxembourg: Luxembourg City

A few things to know when visiting Luxembourg is there are three official languages spoken here.

Because the country is bordered by Belgium, France and Germany, you will hear people speaking French, German and Luxembourgish.

Our road trip through Luxembourg starts out at it’s Capital in Luxembourg City. Luxembourg City is famed for its fortified medieval old town perched on sheer cliffs.

If you only have a day to visit this country, then this is the perfect place to visit.

Full of beautiful architecture, history and a romantic vibe, this city has a little bit of everything for everyone.

Make sure to explore the Bock Casemates. The Casemates is a vast underground system of passages and galleries that was built in the 10th century as part of the cities defenses.

You also can’t miss visiting the Grund, which is one of the most beautiful places in the city.

Visit the Luxembourg American Memorial Cemetery

Located on the outskirts of Luxembourg City lies the American Memorial Cemetery.

The Luxembourg American Memorial Cemetery is the final resting place of over 5,000 American service members, who’s lives were taken during the Battle of the Bulge.

At the center of the American Memorial cemetery, lies the grave of General George S. Patton, standing tall in front of his men.

It was an honor to get to visit the cemetery and salute some of America’s heroes.

Castles of Luxembourg

We love visiting Castles, and Luxembourg is home to about fifty castles!

You can even follow the national hiking trail of the “Valley of the seven castles” that runs through the idyllic Valley of Eisch, which we wished we did if we had more time.

We did however get to see a few Castles during our road trip through Luxembourg and they were so amazing. Here are a few that we would like to share:

Clervaux Castle

The first Castle we come across during our road trip through Luxembourg is Clervaux Castle.  

Clervaux Castle is located in Northern Luxembourg and dates back to the 12th century. Destroyed by fire in the Second World War during the Battle of the Bulge, the castle has now been fully rebuilt.

The castle is now used partly as a museum and partly for housing the local administration. The views from here were just phenomenal, it showcases just how green this country is.

Vianden Castle

Another Castle town we visit on our road trip through Luxembourg is Vianden.

Vianden is home to one of the largest fortified castles in Europe, with origins dating from the 10th century, and has been the seat of the counts of Vianden up until the beginning of the 15th century.

Vianden Castle has since been fully restored, and now ranks as a monument of not only regional, but European importance. 

We took a self guided tour of Vianden Castle, and had an amazing time learning the history.

Vianden is also a town where Victor Hugo took refuge after being expelled from Belgium.  His residence can still be found in Vianden city and is now a museum.

Beaufort Castle

We spent a day in Vianden and stumbled upon another Castle on our way back to Luxembourg City.

Dating from the 11th century, Beaufort Castle consists of the ruins of the medieval fortress and an adjacent Renaissance château.

The castle of Beaufort was ruined by the Thirty Year War, and at the beginning of the 19th century, was even used as a quarry.

In 1850, the Luxembourg government declared the castle a cultural heritage, and is now open to the public.

You can go on a self-guided tour, (or if you book in advance), a guided tour of the Castle ruins and its Chateau.

We did the self-guided tour and it was so much fun exploring the Castle ruins.

Tickets can be purchased onsite at the entrance and comes with a brochure with a map and some information on the history of the castle.

Road trip through Luxembourg: Hike Mullerthal Trail

At the end of our Beaufort Castle tour, we decided to go on a short hike on the Mullerthal trail , since the entrance to the trail was just across the street from the castle.

The Mullerthal trail is over 112 km (70 miles) long, and some of it’s highlights are the beautiful rock formations and relaxing ponds.

This trail is one of the most beautiful and family friendly trails in Luxembourg, and is a must do when visiting this beautiful country.

The Grund Luxembourg City

We end our road trip through Luxembourg back to where we started, the beautiful Luxembourg City. This time we wanted to give the Grund area of Luxembourg a closer look.

 Located in the lower part of the city, along the banks of the Alzette River, the Grund is one of the oldest and most picturesque parts of the city.

With it’s quiet and relaxing atmosphere, the Grund is the perfect place to wander and take in the views. It was one of our favorite places to explore in Luxembourg City.
