How to get to Luxembourg City

Luxembourg borders Germany, France and Belgium, and is an easy day trip from any one of these countries.

You can easily get here by train or by car, but I suggest going on a road trip to Luxembourg City. The scenery driving here is amazing, but if you can’t get here by car, then the train is the next best thing.

You can pretty much get to Luxembourg City by train from any of the bordering countries in about 3 hours or less. The train from Paris to Luxembourg City is just a little over two hours.

Visit the Grand Ducal Palace

One of the fun things to do in Luxembourg City with kids is to watch the guards as they do their march along the Grand Ducal Palace. Our little one thought it was so cool, and we found her following the guards along as they marched back and forth!

The Grand Ducal Palace is the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and his office where he performs his duties as head of state of the Grand Duchy.

The building was also the first City Hall from 1572-1795, as well as the headquarters of the government in 1817. You can go on a guided tour of the Palace in the summer from July to the end of August, and must be reserved in advance.

Its defences were bolstered by three fortified rings with 24 forts, 16 other strong defensive works and a unique 23 km long network of casemates, which consists of a vast underground system of passages and galleries.

Our little one enjoyed exploring the Bock Casemate tunnels, and learning more about the history of Luxembourg. You also get the most magnificent views of the city and the Grund from here. It’s one of the best places to visit in Luxembourg city.

Visit Luxembourg City’s Notre Dame Cathedral

Another must do on your trip to Luxembourg city with kids, is a visit to the 17th century Notre Dame cathedral.

Marvel at the late gothic architecture, as you enter this beautiful church. It was originally built as a Jesuit church, and is the only cathedral in Luxembourg.

We love visiting churches when we travel, and always light a candle and say a little prayer. Our little one always looks forward to that, and has become one of our travel rituals.
