Visit Vianden Luxembourg in one day

During our road trips through Europe, we got to visit Vianden Luxembourg in one day and totally fell in love with this charming little town. Vianden is a little town that sits along the Our River in Luxembourg’s Ardennes region.

It is known for the centuries-old hilltop Castle, and picturesque streets. Since it’s located within the Ardennes forest, it’s also a great place to do some hiking with its lush green forests and mountainous landscape.

How to get to Vianden

Vianden is such a compact city, one of the best ways to get around is on foot with a lovely stroll around the town.

You can easily get here by train from Luxembourg City, but I highly recommend you rent a car and admire the beautiful landscape and scenery in Luxembourg, it’s absolutely beautiful!

Visit the museums in Vianden

There are a few historic places worth noting, such as the Victor Hugo Literary Museum, which is a house that hosted the writer in 1871 during his political exile from France. It is now a museum which you can visit and admire some of his many early works.

Another great way to learn more about Viandens history is a visit to the Musée d’Histoire de la Ville de Vianden. It’s always nice to learn more about a places history with a visit to the local museum.

Explore Vianden Castle

One of the main tourist attraction in Vianden is its hilltop castle. Vianden castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries and became the seat of the counts of Vianden.

It is also one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine with origins dating to the 10th century. It was home to the Counts of Vianden up until the 16th century, before it was abandoned and left to ruins.

How to get to the castle

There are a couple ways to get up to the castle. We walked from our hotel to the castle, which was about a 20 minute walk up some hilly streets, but totally doable with kids. The Grand-Rue takes you all the way up to the castle, along cobblestone streets and centuries old buildings.

Another option is up a chairlift, you get the most amazing views up here, but is only open during the warmer months. I highly recommend walking to the castle if you can, the walk itself is amazing with the many beautiful streets.
