How to spend the day in Koblenz Germany
Our road trip through Germany takes us to Koblenz. Koblenz is situated on both banks of the Rhine where it is joined by the Moselle.
Because of it’s location, it is the gateway to the terraced vineyards and ruined castles of the Rhine Gorge. On the blog I will share how to spend the day in Koblenz Germany, and the top must see sites!

Top things to do in Koblenz Germany
Visit the Deutsches Eck
One of the things Koblenz is known for is Deutsches Eck. Known as the Germans corner, the meeting place of the Rhine and Moselle has been an important part of the city’s natural defenses since 1216.
This is a wonderful place to watch the sunset over the city and a great place for the kiddos to just play. Take in the views of the Rhine river and the city from here. In the center, a monumental statue of William the Great marks the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers.
Splash around at the Water Park
Located close to the Deutsches Eck, is a fun splash pad for the kiddos. We were here in the summer and it was such a great place to cool down.
We weren’t prepared with a suit for our little one, but we allowed her to get wet. I always bring extra clothes with me when we travel, which is the biggest tip when traveling with kids!
We had so much fun here and its location by the river promenade was perfect. When you get hungry there are many cafes and restaurants nearby. We practically spent the whole day here, as there were many events going on around the area as well.
Visit the Fortress (Festung Ehrenbreitstein)
One of Koblenz main tourist attraction is the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress. The Fortress is the second largest preserved fortress in Europe, and was established as a Roman military post around 8 B.C. There is a museum you can visit to learn more about it’s history.
We simply enjoyed the amazing panoramic city views from atop. You can reach the fortress on a cable car that goes across the Rhine, with superb views over the town and the two rivers.
Visit the Electoral Palace
Visit the sprawling complex of the Electoral Palace. The French neoclassical Palace was the residence of the last Archbishop and Elector of Trier, who commissioned the building in the late 18th century.
Visit the Palace and admire it’s beautiful gardens, it was absolutely amazing. There is also a wonderful regal playground on the premises, complete with a crown play structure, which our little totally enjoyed. We spent a lot of time here, it was the perfect place to unwind and let the kiddos run free and play.
Explore the Alte Burg
Strolling through the town you will come across many buildings of interest, one in particular is the Alte Burg or Old Castle. It was a former electoral castle dating to the 13th century.
The castle was partly built on the ruins of the Late Roman city wall dating to the 4th century, and was originally surrounded by a moat.
Visit the Churches in Koblenz
On our trips around Europe, we always visit churches and light a candle. Here in Koblenz, we found a few worth noting.
One in particular is the Liebfrauenkirche (Church of Our Lady), which was built on the highest point of the city and from the late middle ages to the French Revolution, was the main parish church in Koblenz.
Its origins date back to the 5th century when the Franks established a church in what had been Roman buildings. It was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded using the original foundations.
Admire the Old town (Altstadt)
Discover the old town of Koblenz, with its romantic narrow streets, picturesque courtyards and small, cosy squares where you can sit in one of the cafes and just admire your surroundings.
We had a lovely time strolling through this wonderful city, where every corner was just so beautiful and picturesque.
These were just a few of the city of Koblenz main attractions. Koblenz was a short stop on our road trips through Germany, but we found it to be a great city to visit and wish we could’ve stayed a little longer.
The best thing about planing a vacation to Germany is that every city you visit will always be beautiful and family friendly. To date it is one of our favorite countries to explore, and hope we can come back one day!
