Day trip to Mt. Pilatus from Lucerne

During a trip to Lucerne, we took a day trip to Mt Pilatus, and it was one of the most amazing experience!

Mt. Pilatus overlooks the city of Lucerne, and is worth the visit when planning a trip to Lucerne. We spent a few days here, and added a day trip to Mt. Pilatus.

If you’re short on time, you can easily spend one day visiting both the city of Lucerne and Mt. Pilatus.

You can spend the morning visiting Mt. Pilatus, and the afternoon exploring Lucerne’s main attractions.

But if you want to make the most of your time here, I suggest staying at least two days in Lucerne.

Day Trip to Mt. Pilatus from Lucerne

How to get to Mt Pilatus

Mt. Pilatus is an easy day trip from Lucerne. You can easily take a bus from the city into the town of Kriens and from there take the gondola and cable car up to the mountain.

When staying in a hotel in the city, you get free bus passes throughout your stay called the Visitor Card Lucerne, it’s the easiest way to get to Kriens.

There are also other ways to get up to Mt. Pilatus depending on the season, such as the cogwheel railway, it’s the steepest railway in the world.

What to do on a day trip to Mt Pilatus

There are many opportunities for outdoor activities on a day trip to Mt Pilatus. You can go for a hike, mountain biking or go on the ropes course.

We were also entertained by paraglider’s and a couple of guys playing the Alphorn, it was so much fun!

Your first stop on your way up to the mountain is Fräkmüntegg. From here you can go on a toboggan ride, there’s a rope park, and a fun playground for the kids as well.

Hike Mt.Pilatus

 There are also many opportunities for hiking up on Mt. Pilatus as well. We chose to do a few hikes on our day trip to Mt. Pilatus and it was absolutely breathtaking.

We also got to play in the snow and build a snowman, since the mountain still had a bunch of snow during our visit in the spring.

There are many trails ranging from easy to Alpine, and a few that are perfect to do with the kids. Visit the website here for more information on some of the hiking trails at Mt. Pilatus.

Where to eat on Mt. Pilatus

If you’re planning to hit the hiking trails, make sure to pack some snacks, and a picnic lunch, especially when visiting with kids.

There are also a few restaurants located at the top of Mt. Pilatus. We enjoyed the Swiss cuisine at the Restaurant Fräkmüntegg, which is a self service restaurant. You can also visit the gift shop for snacks, and souvenirs as well.

We had an amazing day trip to Mt Pilatus! Our little one still talks about when she went on a cable car up the mountain and made a snowman, it definitely was one of our most memorable trips. If you’re ever in Lucerne, make sure to take a day trip to Mt Pilatus, it’s so worth the visit.
