Germany was our favorite country to explore. Every single city and town we’ve visited was always so beautiful and charming, never been to any we didn’t love.

The best part is that you will always find an enchanting fairytale castle in Germany. Germany has over 20,000 castles to see, which is quite impressive!

1. Cochem Germany

Cochem, Germany is a beautiful castle town located in the Moselle Valley. One of Cochem’s main attraction is it’s castle perched up on the hills.

Cochem castle is a real life fairytale castle in Germany and is absolutely gorgeous! Because of its location in the Moselle Valley, you can enjoy lots of activities in the area, such as hiking, winery visits, and cycling.

Go on a wine tasting tour on the Mosel wine region, and stroll through the beautiful vineyards.

Take a tour of the Reichsburg Cochem castle, or simply stroll through the promenade and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It is also a great base for cruises on the Moselle River.

 2. BURG ELTZ

Another one of Germanys fairytale castle town to visit is the medieval Burg Eltz castle. Burg Eltz is nestled in the hills above the Moselle River, and is labeled as one of the most beautiful castles in Germany.

It is still owned by a branch of the same family that lived there in the 12th century. Because of its location deep in the forest, it is one of the few castles in Germany that has never been destroyed.

It is definitely one of our favorite castles in Germany, because of its fairytale setting, and the fact that everything about it was authentic.

3. NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE

One of the most beautiful Bavarian castles in Germany is Neuschwanstein Castle. This castle was the inspiration to Disney’s Cinderella castle, and felt like stepping into a real life fairytale during our visit.

Nestled on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau, Neuschwanstein castle is a real life fairytale located in an enchanting forest, just like the Disney movies!

King Ludwig II of Bavaria commissioned the castle as a retreat, and was intended as his home, until he died in 1886. He didn’t get to live in the castle for long before his untimely death.

It has since been open to the public, and is now one of the most popular tourist destination in Europe, and the most visited castle in Germany.

4. BEILSTEIN

One of the most beautiful villages in Germany, and happens to also be called “The sleeping beauty of the Moselle” is Beilstein Germany.

We’ve visited quite a few fairytale towns in Germany, but Beilstein is just one of the most picturesque. A cute little town surrounded by vineyards and a castle perched up on a hill. It’s definitely one of Germany’s hidden gem.

A cruise on the Moselle River is the best way to see some of Germany’s medieval castles in the region. The cruise takes you on an adventure through some of the most charming and quaint little towns.

5. HEIDELBERG

Situated along the Neckar River in Germany is the town of Heidelberg. Heidelberg was one of our favorite German towns that we visited during our road trips through Germany.

The town of Heidelberg is dominated by castle ruins. Built around the early 13th-century, Heidelberg castle was one of the most grandest palaces of the Renaissance period, and you can go on a self guided tour.

Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination because of its Romantic cityscape and its castle ruins. If your ever in this region of Germany, make sure to visit this beautiful city!

6. MONSCHAU

Monschau, Germany is truly one of the most charming fairytale towns we’ve visited during our road trip through Germany. It’s location along the Eifel mountain range, makes it a great base for all sorts of outdoor activities in the area.

Monschau is one of the most picturesque towns in the area. The cobblestone streets, and winding alleyways just begs you to explore. It definitely feels like you’ve stepped into a real life fairytale.

Perched up above the town is the 13th century Monschau Castle. Since the castle is in ruins, it is completely free to enter and explore the castle ruins.

Theres really not much going on here, except that it’s a popular venue for summer concerts, and theres an amazing playground for the kiddos.
