How to spend one day in Nuremberg Germany

During a road trip to Prague, we decided to spend the day in Nuremberg and we were so glad we did. Nuremberg is a historic city in Bavaria, distinguished by it’s medieval architecture, such as the fortifications and stone towers of its Altstadt.

It was also the site of the Nuremberg rallies and the Nuremberg trials. You will find many museums about this time in our history, but since we were with our little one, we chose to skip the museums and focus more on the city itself.

We were blown away on our visit, and was surprised at how much we loved the city. On the blog, I will highlight how we spent the day exploring the historic city of Nuremberg, and the top things to do and see.

Top things to do in Nuremberg

Visit the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg

One of the main attractions in Nuremberg is the Imperial Castle of Nuremberg. The castle is located at the northern edge of the old town. On your sightseeing tour of Nuremberg, make sure to stop by and explore this medieval fortification.

It is considered to be one of Europe’s most formidable medieval fortifications, and it represented the power and importance of the Holy Roman Empire and the Imperial city of Nuremberg.

The Imperial castle is also the best vantage point for the most amazing views of the city. If you’re planning a visit to Nuremberg, definitely make the time to explore the Nuremberg Castle.

Stroll the Weißgerbergasse (Tanners Lane)

One of the best things to do in Nuremberg is a leisurely stroll along the Weißgerbergasse. The name comes from the tanners who lived in this lane during the Middle Ages, and was home to some of the wealthiest.

This street is lined with the largest ensemble of medieval half-timbered houses in Nuremberg, and they are absolutely beautiful! The picturesque street is one of the most photographed, and is home to shops, cafes and restaurants.

Visit one of the many beautiful churches

One of the highlights of Nuremberg is definitely the churches. You will notice many churches in Nuremberg, and one of the most impressive and eye-catching of which is the St. Lorenz Cathedral.

St. Lorenz Cathedral

St. Lorenz is a medieval church of the former free imperial city of Nuremberg, and is dedicated to Saint Lawrence.

The church was badly damaged during the Second World War and later restored, it is now one of the most prominent churches of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria.

Famous for it’s stylish twin spires, which tower some 80 meters, the cathedral is absolutely stunning!

The Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady)

Another church in Nuremberg worth highlighting is the Church of our Lady. You can find this church in Nuremberg’s main Market Square, along with the outdoor market.

Built from about 1352-1362, the church houses numerous works of art from the Middle Ages. The interior is absolutely beautiful, and I highly recommend a visit when sightseeing Nuremberg.

Stroll around the Hauptmarkt

Nuremberg’s Main Market Square (Nürnberger Hauptmarkt) is a historic landmark that has been the center of activity in the city since medieval times.

Here you will find a seasonal market, selling fresh flowers, fruits, and yummy food. It is also home to the city’s famous Christmas Market.

In the Square, you will notice a beautiful tall fountain. The Schönen Brunnen (beautiful fountain), which is a gilded fountain with ornate tiers of figures and decorations.

It is one of the most stunning features in the Hauptmarkt, as well as the 14th century Frauenkirche, which dates back to the 14th century. This is the perfect place to relax as you admire the beautiful architecture around you.

Admire the Heilig-Geist-Spital (Hospital of the Holy Spirit)

In the Nuremberg’s city center, on the bank of the river Pegnitz, stands the Hospital of the Holy Spirit. Founded in 1332, this was one of the largest hospitals of the Middle Ages.

Today it is now a retirement home, and a restaurant, and probably one of Nuremberg’s most photographed spot.
