On a family road trip along the Alsatian Wine Route in France, we spent the day in the enchanting town of Riquewihr, which is one of the gems of the Alsace Region.

Riquewihr served as a wine village and trading post for Alsatian and German wine, making it one of the best places to taste the region’s flavors.

Top things to do in Riquewihr France; Best day trip in the Alsace

Stroll through the picturesque streets of Riquewihr

One of the best things to do in Riquewihr is a stroll along the charming streets. This town is so beautiful and all you need to do is explore on foot and admire the pretty streets.

Walking through Riquewihr is like walking into a fairytale, the half-timbered houses and cobblestone streets are just pure eye candy!

As you make your way around the town, you will notice that almost every window sill is covered with flowers and kooky adornments, especially during the Easter Festivals, or at Christmas time.

During the holiday festivities, these windows will be adorned with some over-the-top decorations which are so amazing!

Explore the history of Riquewihr

There is also some history to explore here since Riquewihr is one of the few villages in the region that survived the Second World War.

Its medieval old town consists of colorful half-timbered houses dating back to the 15th-18th centuries, which back in the day indicated what type of establishment they were.

There are also a few museums you can visit to learn more about the history of Riquewihr:

• The Thieves’ Tower, which is the former prison of Riquewihr
• The 16th-century Winemaker’s House
• The 13th-century Dolder Tower which is a former defensive gateway

Explore the vineyards in Riquewihr France

Another highlight of this magnificent village is its vineyards. Make sure and take the time to visit the vineyards and go on a wine-tasting tour.

There are so many cellars to visit, and the wine makes the perfect souvenir. One of our favorites was the Riesling, we made sure to buy a few bottles to take home.

Sample the Alsatian Cuisine in Riquewihr France

One of the best things to do on your visit to Riqeuwihr is to sample the Alsatian cuisine. There are a few specialties to try, but the tarte flambé was one of our favorites.

Riquewihr is also known for its macaroons, with many different flavors. Make sure to sample some and take some home for later, they tasted amazing!

Before you leave, visit one of the many souvenir shops, they sell some of the coolest half-timbered souvenir houses and other Alsatian novelty items.

Riquewihr was such an amazing day trip in the Alsace Region. Since it’s just a short drive away from Ribeauville, and Colmar, it’s a great stop to add to your Alsatian road trip. We stopped here on our way to Colmar, and it’s one of our favorite places ever! It truly felt like stepping foot into a fairytale.
