A visit to the Magical Hallerbos forest with kids

During our time in Belgium, we were lucky enough to experience the magical Hallerbos forest.

Every year in the Spring, the forest in the town of Halle blooms with its beautiful carpet of bluebells.

The transformation is just so enchanting and magical! Words can’t really describe how beautiful it truly is, you really just have to visit and see for yourself.

On the blog I highlight how to see this wonderful enchanted forest, so you can plan your spring travels to Belgium. Hallerbos Forest is the perfect day trip from Brussels if you have more time.

When to visit Hallerbos Forest with kids

When planning a visit to the Hallerbos Forest, the ideal time to see the carpet of bluebells is between mid April to early May, when the bluebells are at their peak and in full bloom.

Even with that information, the bluebells peak bloom is all dependent on the weather, and peak times will vary every year.

The best way to know for sure is to keep track by watching videos posted regularly on their official website, hallerbos.be.

We visited sometime at the end of April and the bluebells were in full bloom and they were absolutely stunning! Keep in mind it took two visits in one season to catch them in full bloom.

How to get to the Hallerbos Forest

Tourists and residents alike flock to the Hallerbos forest to witness this magical carpet of bluebells, which can make for a very crowded visit at times.

I suggest you plan a visit during the weekdays if you can to avoid the crowds.

Make sure to arrive early to beat the afternoon crowds and to ensure you have a parking spot on your visit.

The best way to get here is either by car or train. From Brussels, make a stop at the Halle train station and from there you can take a bus directly to Hallerbos forest. Click here for more info.

If you decide to drive here, there are a few designated parking lots. On our visit, we parked in the Hallerbos Forest parking 8, (which you can type in Google maps).

There are a few other parking spots at Hallerbos, but be aware that most of these parking spaces are small, and usually on the side of the road.

What to expect on your visit to Hallerbos Forest

Once you make your way through the Forest be prepared to be amazed!

If you visit during peak bloom, the forest floor will be covered with bluebells and it’s quite spectacular.

Don’t miss the giant Sequoia trees standing tall in the forest. You really can’t miss them as you make your way through the forest.

These giant trees were our little ones favorite part about the Hallerbos Forest, and they were truly majestic.

A few tips on visiting Hallerbos Forest

Keep in mind when visiting Hallerbos forest with kids, there are no public restrooms or restaurants.

So when traveling with the kiddos, make sure they have bathroom breaks before getting here and also pack snacks!

It’s okay to take photos here, but technically you’re not allowed to do a professional photo shoot without permission first.

Although during our visit, everyone was having some sort of photo shoot going on! Just make sure to stay within the paths and not trample on the bluebells.

I found a lot of people not being respectful enough of the rules and stepping all over the flowers.

So please when visiting, please respect nature and keep the flowers beautiful for everyone to admire!

We had the best time exploring Hallerbos forest with kids. There are many opportunities for some wonderful scenic family hikes here as well.

Make sure to plan accordingly if you’re planning on some day hikes, like I said there aren’t any restrooms, or places to eat.

The Hallerbos Forest is such an awesome day trip from Brussels, and I highly recommend seeing this enchanting forest if you happen to be here in the spring!
