Springtime visit to the Arlington National Cemetery
The Arlington National cemetery is a 624 acre, US military cemetery, where some of America’s heroes are laid to rest. Established in 1864 during the civil war, it is located on the grounds of Arlington House, which had been the estate of the family of confederate General Robert E. Lee’s wife.

Such a beautifully laid out memorial, and what better time to visit than in the spring, when the trees are in full bloom!
Along with the tidal basin, you will also find some beautiful cherry blossom trees, as well as beautifully landscaped gardens. Take a stroll through this lovely memorial and honor some of our greatest heroes.
Arlington National Cemetery is the home of several well-known historic sites. One of them in particular is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is a tribute to unidentified fallen soldiers who fought in World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by Tomb Guard sentinels from the elite 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment.
Sit on the steps of the memorial and watch these elite guards do their time honored tradition of watching over the tomb, and the changing of the guard ceremony.
It is a quite an experience and a must do when visiting the DC Metro area.
One other highlight of the cemetery, is the final resting place of one of our greatest presidents, John F. Kennedy, and his wife Jackie Onassis, resting side by side. During his funeral, an eternal flame was lit and still remains alight today.
In addition to the Kennedy’s, President Taft and the seven Space Shuttle Challenger astronauts are also buried here. Since it’s such an expansive memorial, there are guided tours available to help you learn more about its history, and to help you find these specific highlights.
The Arlington cemetery is a peaceful sanctuary for America’s Hero’s. One of our goals is to visit as many American Memorial cemeteries around the world, and to honor these brave soldiers who have fought for our freedom.
We were fortunate enough to visit a few memorials in America, some overseas in Belgium, France and Luxembourg. It was such an honor to get to visit these memorials, and to salute them for their bravery. If you ever plan to visit this area, make sure to pay a visit to the Arlington National cemetery, it is one of the most beautiful memorials in America!
