How to visit the Tulip Fields at Burnside farms

Less than an hour away from Washington D.C. is Virginia’s own version of the Dutch Tulip fields. Since we’ve moved to the DC area, I’ve been on the lookout for tulip fields near me, and this one was absolutely beautiful!

Every year, Burnside farms hosts their annual Festival of Spring, pick your own tulip event, with over fifteen acres of spring flowers to choose from.

These colorful fields are just so beautiful with rows and rows of colorful tulips as far as the eyes can see! It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in search of some spring blooms in the area.

Best time to visit the Tulip fields at Burnside farms 

For the 2022 season, Burnside Farms will open on April 5, from Mon-Sun 9am-6pm (weather permitting).

Tickets are available for purchase for April 5 thru April 8,2022 for now, but more ticket dates will be released and is dependent on weather! Visit the website here for more information.

The best time to visit the tulip fields at Burnside farms is during peak bloom, which is usually around mid-April, and lasts about 21-30 days, (depending on the weather).

*Note: Dogs are not allowed at the tulip farm.

Where to get tickets to Burnside Farms

There are a few ticket options for the Festival of Spring pick your own tulip event, and flowers are included with admission: Adult tickets-5 stems, Child tickets-3 stems.

Tickets sell out quickly, especially for weekend visits. Purchase tickets here.

  • Weekday admissions– $20.50 (ages 13 and up) / $15.50 (ages 3-12) / kids under 3 FREE
  • Weekend admissions – $22.50 (ages 13 and up) / $17.50 (ages 3-12) / kids under 3 FREE
  • You can also purchase an Annual Passport which comes with unlimited re-entry during the Festival of Spring and Summer of Sunflowers events, with exclusive access to two preview events (one for each season).
  • You can visit anytime they’re open even if tickets are sold out. Flowers are also included with each visit: Adult (5 stems), Child (3 stems). There are limited tickets and costs $70 (adults 13+) / $50 (kids 3-12)

What to expect on your visit 

The tulips at Burnside Farms covers over 15 acres of more than 2.5 million tulips and daffodils to enjoy.

  • You can pick your own tulip which cost $1 per stem (extra $1 for the bulb), and $1 for 2 daffodils. (credit cards only)
  • For the 2022 season, admission fees for the Festival of Spring include 5 free tulip stems (adult tickets), 3 free tulips (child tickets)
  • You can purchase a vase for your tulips or not, but be prepared for even longer lines to make your purchase.
  • To avoid the crowds at the tulip festival at Burnside Farms, I highly suggest you visit during the weekdays. The weekends can get packed, and it gets difficult to photograph the tulip fields without the crowds.
  • There are portable restrooms on the field and in the barn courtyard/picnic area.

Fun things to do at Burnside farms for kids

Not only can you pick your own tulips at Burnside farms, there are a few fun activities for the kids as well.

 The kids will love the wagon rides, and the fun play area complete with a Jump Pad, inflatable slides, a playground, grain bin basketball, playhouse area, short film cinema in the barn, and more than 100 pairs of authentic dutch wooden shoes to play around with.

 There are usually food vendors and live music on the weekends, but I suggest you pack a picnic lunch and some snacks for the kids. There is a picnic area that will be spaced out for social distancing for you to use.

Sunflower fields at Burnside Farms

In the Summer, Burnside Farms also has a fun sunflower field you can visit. I’ve always wanted to photograph sunflower fields near me, and this is one of the best sunflower fields in Virginia where you can also pick your own sunflowers as well!

The Summer of Sunflowers event at Burnside Farms usually starts from about mid to late July through Labor Day and goes for about six weeks. You can also expect a sunflower maze here, which is the only place I know that does this in the area.

There are over 30 varieties of sunflowers to choose from and tickets costs $14 for adults (which comes with 3 free pick your own sunflowers) Child tickets costs $10, while kids 3 and under are free. Extra sunflower stems costs an additional $1.50.

We had an awesome time at the tulip fields at Burnside farms. It’s not the Netherlands, but we sure got a taste of the Dutch tulip fields complete with the giant wooden shoes.
