Luxembourg city is one of the smallest countries in Europe, and probably one of the most underrated.
Bordered by Germany, France, and Belgium, Luxembourg City is a wonderful mix of different cultures. Its location within the Ardennes forest makes it a great place for outdoor adventures for the whole family.

Visit the Grand Ducal Palace
One of the fun things to do in Luxembourg City on a day trip is to watch the guards as they do their march along the Grand Ducal Palace. Our little one thought it was so cool, and we found her following the guards along as they marched back and forth!
The Grand Ducal Palace is the official residence of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and his office where he performs his duties as head of state of the Grand Duchy.
The building was also the first City Hall from 1572-1795, as well as the headquarters of the government in 1817. You can go on a guided tour of the Palace in the summer from July to the end of August and tickets must be reserved in advance.
- Tickets: Tickets can be purchased at the reception desk of the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (Place Guillaume II) or online here.
- Adults: 18.00€
- Children from 4 to 12 years of age: 9€
- Free for children under 4 years of age

Explore the Bock Casemates
One of the most popular Luxembourg City attractions is the Bock Casemates. The Bock Casemates were built around the early 10th century and were considered one of Europe’s strongholds during the time.
The fortification consisted of a long network of tunnels and a vast underground system of passages and galleries.
Our little one enjoyed exploring the tunnels and learning more about the history of Luxembourg. You also get the most magnificent views of the city and the Grund from here. It’s one of the best places to visit in Luxembourg city.
Visit the Grund in Luxembourg City
On your sightseeing tour of Luxembourg City, don’t miss a visit to the Grund area of the city. The Grund is a charming district known for its medieval architecture and scenic riverside promenade.
It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque places in Luxembourg City, which we happen to stumble upon during a stroll around the city.
The Grund was the perfect place to take a break from sightseeing in Luxembourg City. The gorgeous gardens and parks were perfect for the little ones, and the views of the city were amazing.
Admire the city views from the Chemin de la Corniche
One of the best places to admire the views of Luxembourg City is the Chemin de la Corniche. It is known as “the most beautiful balcony of Europe”, and was built in the 17th century by Spain and France.
From here you get the most amazing views of Luxembourg city’s old town, the casemates, and the Grund. It’s one of the highlights of our visit and is one place to add to your day trip itinerary to Luxembourg City.
Visit Luxembourg City’s Notre Dame Cathedral
Another must-do on your trip to Luxembourg City is a visit to the 17th-century Notre Dame Cathedral. Marvel at the late gothic architecture, as you enter this beautiful church. It was originally built as a Jesuit church and is the only cathedral in Luxembourg.
- Location: Boulevard Roosevelt | rue Notre-DameL-2450 Luxembourg
- Hours: Open from 8am-6pm / Sundays till 7pm
Stroll Luxembourg City’s Old City Centre
A stroll through Luxembourg City’s old city center is probably one of the best things to do, especially if you only have one day in Luxembourg City.
The Old City Center is the perfect place to wander, with many historic buildings and gorgeous architecture to admire.
The kids will love how lively and bustling the town square is with the various events going on, and fun entertainers along the square. You will always find something to do in Luxembourg City, whether you’re here to shop, dine, or just here for its history.
For the kiddos, Luxembourg City has many different playgrounds and parks for them to run around in, which makes it a family-friendly city to visit.
Visit the Constitution Square
One of the most interesting attractions in Luxembourg City is the Memorial Obelisk in Constitution Square. This memorial is dedicated to World War II soldiers and symbolizes freedom and resistance for its people.
Constitution Square is also a great place to park if you’re driving into Luxembourg city. Just make sure to arrive early in the morning to catch a spot.
I hope this guide inspires you to plan a visit to Luxembourg City. It’s an easy day trip from anywhere in Europe, and you can easily see most of the main sights in one day.
If you have more time, then a weekend trip to Luxembourg City is the best option. There is so much more to see in this underrated city in Europe.

Looks like you had a great day there! Even though we lived very close to Luxembourg, we never did much exploring there. I can see we missed out!
